چکیده

Cavernous hemangiomas affect mainly the brain and infrequently they are located in the intramedullary space. Spinal epidural cavernous haemangiomas are extremely rare and are mainly located to the cervico-thoracic spine. It is infrequently considered in the differential diagnosis of spinal epidural masses. We report a rare case of a cavernous haemangioma confined to the lumbar spinal epidural space. A 27 year-old man came to our attention complaining of a progressive weakness and impaired cutaneous sensibility on the left inferior limb. An MRI showed a pure extradural mass without invasion of the bone. He was submitted to an open surgery and the mass was removed. The histopathology revealed a typical cavernous haemangioma. The patient showed significant clinical and neurological improvement after surgery. Radiological presentation could be confusing in a purely epidural cavernous haemangioma. Awareness of the characteristics of the lesion will facilitate its diagnosis and treatment.

Thoracic Extraosseous Epidural Cavernous Hemangioma

Cavernous hemangiomas were first reported in 1929 by Globus and Doshay, and are defined as benign vascular structures developed between the neural tissues occurring in the central nervous system, consisting of a dilated vascular bed. Cavernous hemangiomas comprise nearly 5-12% of all spinal vascular malformations; however, existence in the epidural space without bone involvement is rare. Only 4...

Spinal epidural cavernous hemangioma: case report.

Pure epidural cavernous hemangiomas are quite rare. In this paper, a case of lumbar epidural cavernous hemangioma presenting as a lumbar radiculopathy is presented. The magnetic resonance imaging findings, differential diagnosis and therapy options of this rare case are discussed.

An epidural cavernous hemangioma of the spine.

Cavernous hemangiomas are uncommon vascular malformations of the CNS that may affect any part of the neuroaxis. Most of these lesions are intracranial; supratentorial sites are most common [1]. In the spine, lesions of the vertebral bodies are most common, intramedullary [2] and intradural extramedullary [3] lesions of the spinal axis are uncommon, and purely epidural lesions are rare [4, 5]. W...

Spinal Epidural Cavernous Hemangioma of the Thoracic Spine: A Case Report

Cavernous hemangiomas can arise in any region of the body, including the central nervous system. Spinal cavernous hemangiomas account for 5% 12% of all cases of vertebral vascular malformation. Most of these are of vertebral origin, and cases that are non-vertebral in origin are rare. We encountered a patient with a relatively rare spinal epidural cavernous hemangioma of the thoracic spine that...

Pure Spinal Epidural Cavernous Hemangioma with Intralesional Hemorrhage: A Rare Cause of Thoracic Myelopathy

Although cavernous hemangiomas occur frequently in the intracranial structures, they are rare in the spine. Most of spinal hemangiomas are vertebral origin and "pure" epidural hemangiomas not originating from the vertebral bone are very rare. Our spinal hemangioma case is extremely rare because of its "pure" epidural involvement and intralesional hemorrhage. A 64-year-old man presented with pro...
